ArcelorMittal Europe - Tubular Products Sustainability Report 2023: Our Progress and Commitment

Recognizing the critical role  steel production plays in global carbon emissions, we have committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The steelmaking industry accounts for 7-9% of total carbon emissions worldwide, with each tonne of steel produced in a blast furnace emitting approximately 2.1 tonnes of CO2. To address this, we have embarked on an ambitious roadmap that includes efficiency improvements from 2018 to 2022, which focus on enhancing production processes to reduce energy and resource consumption. Moving forward, from 2024 to 2030, we will implement specific projects to switch from gas to electricity in various facilities, amongst other actions, significantly cutting down our carbon footprint. By 2030, we aim to source a substantial portion of our electricity from renewable sources, further reducing our emissions.

Our commitment to environmental stewardship extends to innovating with low-carbon steel tubes. These products, such as structural square and rectangular tubes, are essential in applications ranging from building structures to renewable energy installations like solar panels and wind turbines. By developing low-carbon solutions, we support the transition towards greener construction materials, helping to decrease the embedded carbon in the built environment.
