Tubular steel structures take flight at the new Finnish Aviation Museum with Nordec and ArcelorMittal
Helsinki, Finland – 10/21/2026 – Nordec, a leading Nordic steel construction company, is working with ArcelorMittal Europe – Tubular Products to deliver an optimised structural steel solution for the new Finnish Aviation Museum in Aviapolis, near Helsinki Airport.

Covering approximately 7,000 m², the museum will offer space for exhibitions, learning, events and activities. Designed by PES-Arkkitehdit and built by Rakennusliike Lapti, the combines structural performance with efficient material use, tailored to the needs of the project.
Nordec is responsible for the detailed design of the steel structures, while the basic design is being carried out by A-insinöörit, commissioned by the project group comprising the Finnish Aviation Museum and Rakennusliike Lapti. Through its collaboration with ArcelorMittal Europe – Tubular Products, Nordec is incorporating a tailored combination of structural performance and material efficiency into the project.
Selecting the right material for the project
The museum's steel frame incorporates 350 × 350 × 12.5 mm square hollow sections in trusses and columns. Hand in hand, constructor and producer selected the section based on the requirements of the structure while optimizing the overall cost perspective.
“Every project has different requirements, so access to a broad product range is important to us. We also value the quality and on-time deliveries we receive from ArcelorMittal,” says Antti Airaksinen, Head of Sourcing at Nordec.
Collaboration supporting an optimised solution
The project demonstrates the importance of close collaboration between the customer and its steel suppliers when developing project-specific solutions. By combining Nordec's expertise in steel construction with ArcelorMittal Europe - Tubular Products' product range, material availability and supply capabilities, the partners were able to identify a solution aligned with the project's technical and commercial requirements.
Annalisa Pouttu, Sales Manager Scandinavia, Finland and the Baltics at ArcelorMittal Europe – Tubular Products, highlights the collaborative approach behind the project:
“From our perspective, this project was particularly successful because all parties worked closely together to find the most efficient and cost-effective solution for the customer's requirements. Through strong collaboration and open communication, we helped ensure that the right material was available at the right time and cost, enabling Nordec to deliver an optimised steel frame solution for an important landmark project. This partnership highlights how we can create value together by combining engineering expertise, product availability and reliable service.”
Supporting the buildings of tomorrow
The Finnish Aviation Museum is an example of how tubular steel solutions can combine structural requirements, material efficiency and verified carbon performance in demanding construction projects.
For Nordec and ArcelorMittal Europe – Tubular Products, the collaboration demonstrates how close customer engagement and reliable steel supply can support efficient solutions for demanding construction projects, while incorporating sustainability considerations into material decisions.
